SimplePie FlatPress plugin

Posted on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, in My Projects, Web | Add a comment

logo_simplepie_horizontal.png I have been working on my PHP skills and have created a flatpress plugin that parses a feed and displays it as a list. It uses the SimplePie class. It’s been tested here and seems to work well. There is a small amount of configuration that needs to be done but otherwise it’s simple to use and it can be edited to suit your needs.

Update: Updated the plugin to output a valid list.

The FlatMistyLook Flatpress theme has been updated to work better with the newer version of Flatpress. The majority of updates where simple CSS statments that effect only the admin panel though there were small tweaks to the front end too.

Here’s the changelog:

  • Added CSS making the widgets panel usable
  • Added CSS for the sub menu
  • Added CSS making the plugins panel a bit more usable
  • Changed links in footer to sneakatron.co.uk
  • Removed bar when there are not any categories

If you are using the FlatMistyLook theme please update it.

Desktop Background switcher (DBS)

Posted on Thursday, September 25, 2008, in Technology, Software, My Projects, Software | Add a comment

DBS is the first program I have written in visual C#. Its purpose is a simple one; to change the background of the desktop after a set amount of time. Yes, I know there are other applications out there that do exactly the same job but there are a number of reasons that I created my own:

  • Because I wanted to learn visual C#
  • Because most of the applications have features in them that either wanted or needed
  • Because this way I know what crap is running in the background when I’m working

It has been tested on both Windows XP and Vista. Tested with .PNG, .JPG , .GIF, and .BMP.

Requires the latest version of the .NET framework.

If you discover any bugs. Please contact me

How It’s Used

It’s easy to use. Just follow these steps:

  • Get your images and through them into a folder stored somewhere on your hard drive
  • Click the browse button and select the folder
  • Let the application do the rest

An extra feature I added is the ability to change the time (in minuets) between wallpaper changes.

Exploits In Writing

Posted on Friday, September 19, 2008, in My Projects, Web, Life | Add a comment

Below is a post cross posted from a new blog I have setup called exploits in writing

So, this is the first in very many post that I will produce for the sake of myself or anyone else that wants to read them.

What these documents will entail are the exploits in writing in which I have chosen to embark on. Many parts of writing will be covered in these documents from the thoughts-to-brain, editing, creativeness and any other subjects within the huge topic of writing. So to start the writing process of I suppose I better tell you about me and why I have come to the conclusion that what I want to do with my life is write.

My name is Richard Hole and was born and still live in the city of Exeter, UK.I don’t claim to be the most read-up person but this doesn’t mean I don’t read. As a small boy I used to love reading and I used to get agitated and even angry when my teachers in middle school would tell me that I could not read books on the next level[1]. Though this never stopped me from reading what I wanted at home. In fact the first ever novel I attempted to read was “The secret diary of Adrian Mole”; I say attempted because I never made it through to the end. Instead I was given a book for Christmas called “Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban”, this was the start of my love for books and reading.

“He likes to read so he assumes he can write”, is what I would expect to hear from someone at this point. I’m very well aware that there are people who think in this way; and yes a lot of them are good writers. But I know that If I want to be a good writer, I’m going to have to work my ass off. Firstly my spelling and grammar are anything but brilliant; and it would not surprise many people to learn that I didn’t do very well in my English GCSEs though I never found the lessons hard, actually I fairly enjoyed them.

The aim of this blog is to help keep track of my writing exploits and post anything that I think is interesting or helpful (I may even publish a short story or two). So here I am at the beginning of my adventures in writing, staring into the abyss of writing and looking forward to what fossils can be found and even what horrors await. I hope that you will join me in my exploits too; after all things can get rather lonely in an abyss.

[1]In middle school we had different levels of reading. Each level would have a colour. The teachers chose what level your on therefore restricting the books that you could read.

Redesign is complete…Again

Posted on Thursday, September 4, 2008, in My Projects, Web, Software | 2 comments

So, you may have noticed that the blog has had a complete redesign. You will firstly notice that I went for a classic blog layout, that is to say that there is now a sidebar instead of a ridiculously large footer. Along with the redesign is a complete reshuffle of the content. Now each type of project has its own page giving it a chance to breath instead of cramming each page full and confusing anyone who sees it (including me).

Along with these changes comes the decision that there will be more content and (to use a buzzword) ‘freebies’. The first ‘freebee’ will an application. Yes, I know that the last application (To-Do-To-Text) sort of went ‘tits up’ but I have made sure that this one actually has a use and that it does what it is supposed to. Another ‘freebee’ is a new theme that I have ported to Flatpress that was originally going to be my new theme. Before this is released I need permission from the creator and I need to clean up the back-end so that it’s actually usable.
