It’s Here

That’s right folks, WordPress 3.0 is finally here. Now I can finally streamline my portfolio site and more importantly develop my new design for this site; meaning I can finally do things that I have wanted for a long time to this site.

Seasons greetings

December 26th, 2009 in Uncategorized | 2 responses

It’s been a little quite around here lately, and that’s due to various reasons that I will not go into now, apart to say that I’ve been working on another personal site of mine that is nearly complete, say for a few tweaks here and there. This is a very quick update just to say that I’m not dead, I’m not planning on kicking the bucket any time soon, and I’m working very hard on making this my ‘personal site’ as opposed to all the bits of web development and design stuff I have been posting lately.

Look for a new update sometime in the new year. oh, and Happy Holidays! It had to be said.
Ta ta for now.

Usercake

November 13th, 2009 in Technology | No responses

To many web application developers user management is the bane of their existence; to quickly and easily implement an user managment system, they would usually have to build their own. But wait! Here comes UserCake, a simple, flexible and customizable ready to go user management system.

Check out the blurb:

‘There are many user systems on the internet and a lot of tutorials too. Sadly many are convoluted, poorly written and insecure.

The goal of UserCake is to provide people with a foundation to build user applications without all the hassle. UserCake is cleanly written, well commented, formatted and documented, did I forget to mention its object oriented for easy customisation? Simple codebase means developing with UserCake is simple and most importantly fast.

UserCake is fully opensource, you may download and re-distribute the code in any form, a link back to the project would be nice, but not required. Enjoy!’

Now does that sound cool or what? I Haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but I most defiantly will.

Prompt Me

October 9th, 2009 in Technology | 2 responses

A while ago I wrote that I was working on certain projects that where of the development variety. I am now pleased to say that one of them is finally complete and the other one is, well, not so complete. Let’s skip over that small detail and focus on the subject at hand. The completed project is called ‘Prompt Me’; and it has a very simple goal; that is to select and display a random writing prompt (that I have wrote) from the database and display on screen. Which by all accounts it does (though there are only about 20 prompts at the moment).

The technical stuff

I wrote The application with the use of the codeigniter PHP library that made development of it much easier. The front was very easy to implement and went as smoothly as it possibly could. The back end, on the other hand, went a little less smoothly; I’ll spare you the details but will say this I now fully appreciate how much hard work goes into creating any bespoke application.

I would like to apologise for the absolutely, positively disgusting design. I will – one day – redesign it but for now, at least it looks better than most of the other applications of the same nature.

Now, why not check out Prompt Me

Thingamablog is moving on

September 24th, 2009 in Technology | 4 responses

It’s been a long time since I last looked at Thingamablog, the blogging system that creates HTML files and FTPs them to your server, which, basically saves time editing pure HTML files and manually having to upload them.

It seems that something is changing over on the development front, which is a good thing since it has been a very long time since the last update. Though I’m a wordpress user now, I still hold an interest in the project because it gives hope to those (very few) that don’t have PHP installed on there server. I once ported themes to the blogging system, but unfortunately mediafire delete all my files and the originals are long gone.

I just thought the software was worth mentioning.

On a more personal note

I have finally finished the development of my first ‘built from scratch’ web application; though I’m lazy and haven’t gotten around to setting it up on the server yet.

Gaming Season

Open Season

Autumn is fast approaching which, of course means that gaming season will be upon us. The following is a list of video games that I’m looking forward too and – if my financial status improves – will be getting my grubby hands on. I only have an Xbox 360 (and a pc of course) and so that is the platform I will mainly be listing.

I’m going on a summer Holiday

July 24th, 2009 in Blog | One response

Going on holiday (I believe they call it a vacation in the U.S). Be back in a week or so; so there will be no new updates. Not like anyone cares :P

Now, where did I put those sunglasses that winter coat?

Projects

July 6th, 2009 in Blog | No responses

In my spare time I’ve been working on two projects that are taking much longer to complete than originally imagined. This is mainly due tot he small amount of time I have had to work on them but is also affected by the fact that I’m lazy and think of a new idea, move onto that, then think of another idea…..you get the picture.I suppose I’m suffering from ‘project overload’, a problem that has plagued me for a while now. The main effect of this is that the projects that I do finish are always so low in quality that I just throw it out and go back to the drawing board.

Anyway. Now I’ve got that useless piece of information out the way here is a small amount about the two projects I’m working on.

the first project is a web site that simply throws a wrting prompt at the the user. Sound boring. Well, yes I suppose it is. The main reason that I have undertook this project is into increase my PHP and MYSQL skills since they are nearly non-existent.

The second project I am working on is a reviews type website. It’s still in the design phase, but I can say that I’m really excited about this one. Once the design has been completed i’ll move onto the development of the back end. This will take a while to complete but shouldn’t be too hard to do. the only problem I’ve encountered is that of content. if you’ve read my reviews you would realize that that kind of writing isn’t one of my forte’s. So I’ll have to try and drum up some interest for writers and other contributors.

I know that these descriptions are really vauge but I’ll release some more information whent the time gets nearer to launch; which will probally be in the year 4242.
